Your Favorite Compass

Wednesday September 7, 2005
I am real curious about the types of compasses foresters, hikers, and orienteers use. I have a preference but could easily be talked out of mine if I ever had to buy a new one. Please help me describe some favorite compasses and why you prefer yours on the About Forestry Forum... Read More Discussion

I am a Cub Scout Den leader and we always have one or two activities that revolve around topo map reading finding directions - getting lost - and getting “unlost” - the use of a compass is very valuable for beginning hikers. For our cubscouts (and myself) we use the Silva Starter 1-2-3 compass. These are inexpensive and good for camping and basic orienteering. I always have a couple of spares for it’s inevitable one that these young explorers will lose their compass on one of our hikes. This is also a nice, small-sized compass for their “survival” fanny pack kit which they all must carry when doing longer treks.
